The Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT 4) is a time tested tool that gives us the specific insight into how a child is learning today. The child gets a benefit of one-on-one attention through the entire process. This is great because they are engaged, less likely to guess and more likely to stay present.
The screening has four elements (a) Word Reading (b) Sentence Comprehension (c) Spelling and (d) Math Computation. A fifth element is created by adding the scores of Word Reading + Sentence Comprehension. This aspect is called the Reading Composite.
The results are specific to age. The WRAT 4 can be given to anyone from the age of 5-94. The standard scores can also be converted into a grade equivalent.
The screening takes between a 30 to 60 minutes depending on age. The results are immediate and a roadmap to how your child is learning becomes powerful information to you. It takes the guess work of whether your child is ahead, behind or keeping pace. There is no way for the child to detach, or guess. These are the reasons other scores are often misleading.
The WRAT 4 is a powerful tool that the parent can take to the teacher. It is also a powerful tool for you as a parent to see where you need to focus your support.
